And the Coffin Hop 2012 Winner is…

Posted in blog hop, coffin hop, evil, fiction, ghost, Halloween, haunting, horror, In Memoriam, White Creek, winner, writer, zombies with tags , , , , on November 2, 2012 by brentabell

The names have been brought together and the entries given to the spirits who live in the random drawing thing on-line.  Each name flutters around and all of them cry out to be the lucky one, the chosen name.  After a moment, a winner is revealed…

But first, this short break.

I want to thank everyone who stopped by on the Coffin Hop 2012!  I had a lot of fun and I hope everyone did too.  The Hop is a great way to meet new authors and win some cool prizes.  Go and buy some of the great work from the Hoppers and stay scared all year until we meet again on this path next year.  Remember, Halloween is a way of life and not a holiday.  Live it and love the whole year (and go buy In Memoriam, help a brother out with his first solo work).

So until next time,

Oh yeah, the winner…

Jason Darrick!  He wins the signed paperback of In Memoriam and the Coffin Hop EP, but since Jason is in the full Coffin Hop anthology, there is another winner for the EP and that person is bn100!  I will contact both of you so we can get the prizes out!

Goodnight…

We Have Nothing to Fear But…

Posted in Halloween, horror, life, vampires, werewolf, winner, zombies on September 11, 2012 by brentabell

Outside the sun is shining bright, the perfect blue sky isn’t blemished by clouds, and the temp is cooler.  The nights are chilly and the specter of fall hovers over the land.  It is mid-September and the finishing touches on another hot summer are at hand.  Halloween decorations adorn the shops and football fever has once again set in.  I should be happy…but I’m not.

This time of year is usually my Christmas.  I love this time when ghosts and goblins rule the night and I can find nice office decorations at every store I go to.  Sure Christmas is nice, but I love the feel Halloween gives me.  I like being scared.

But not like this…

We have things that we fear.  The dark, spiders, and heights are some of the things many have a rational/irrational fear of.  I write horror fiction and tales of the things that go bump in the night.  I thought I knew all about fear, horror, and being scared.  I thought wrong.  Until now, I found out I’ve never truly tasted fear.  Now, I can say for the first time in my life I am scared to death.  The worst fear one can have is to be out of control of something and it begins to race toward a resolution that will shatter your life and everything you’ve ever had.  The loss of that control is scary.  I’m afraid what can happen if not enough can be done to stem the tide.  I’m afraid that everything in my life will turn upside down.  I’m just afraid.

I’m not going to elaborate on exactly what the story is right now, but I needed to express what is racing inside my head.  I have tried to keep from dwelling on it, but it is so hard to try to focus on anything when your body is fighting you.  Before I go, I want to warn everyone it’s not the werewolves, zombies, or vampires that will get you.  If you’re not careful, your own body will get you in the end.

Goodnight…

Lessons Learned and Blog Winners!

Posted in fiction, horror, In Memoriam, life, Mandy DeGeit, reading, Rum, self doubt, Undead Press, Undead Tales 2, winner, writer, zombies on May 27, 2012 by brentabell

First off, I would like to congratulate the three winners from the blog contest.  The winner of the signed Undead Tales 2 book was Beth Lunkenheimer and the two winners that will appear in some upcoming projects were Ashley Smith and Mark Duvall.  I’ve already filled Mark in on his role and he is very excited to be hunting and killing some zombies.  I’m sorry about the delay in posting the winners here (they were posted on the Facebook page), but life has been hectic around here.  In fact, my life is going so wonderful I’ve had to trade in my usual rum, whiskey, or beer for the glass of milk pictured next to here.  I will say that it is in a glass from a brewery, so I’m still representing!

In the past few weeks, the writing world exploded with the situation regarding Undead Press and new author Mandy DeGeit.  I will not rehash the situation here, but if you want to read about what happens when an anthology editor goes above and beyond editing without the author’s approval, click here to go to her blog and catch up on the bad situation.

I almost fell prey to the same guy.  I submitted a story to the same book trying to be in the same anthology as Mandy and my other friend Wesley Southard (link over in author links page).  The story was quickly accepted and I told Mandy we’d be sharing a TOC.  Well, that was until I received the contract.  First, it read like it was written by a third grader and some of the points in it were really bad (like a cut of any future movie options even if the rights have reverted back to the author).  I didn’t care, I wanted to be in the anthology with my friends.  Then we started a rather nasty back and forth about the signature on the contract where the publisher acted like a complete unprofessional ass-hat.  First off, the story I sent in sucked and I knew it, but it was the only finished thing I had (it was the first non-flash story I ever wrote).  When the publisher became insulting over how the signature looked, I pulled the story and went on with my life.  Looking back, I never should have even tried to sell the crappy story and secondly, once I read the contract, I should have walked  then instead of trying to continue.  I learned to read the contract carefully.  I learned to get something besides a copy of the publisher’s self-published drivel for my work.  Hey, I live and I learn.  I have myself to rely on and I try to do the right thing.  I learned my lessons.

Now to help Mandy, the unaltered version of her story “She Makes Me Smile” is now on Kindle.  50% of what the book earns will go toward paying the anthology authors $25 for their story and the rest is going into a fund to hire a lawyer that will look into Undead Press/Living Dead Press/Open Casket Press contracts with the purpose of returning all rights back to the authors that have dealt with those presses.  So go click here to help support the cause.

Now I must get back to some editing on some short stories and work on the novel.  Editing has begun on In Memoriam and I’ll keep you posted.  The milk is calling so,

Goodnight…

Wow, I’m An Award Winner?

Posted in beer, convention, fiction, horror, Liebster Blog Award, life, Mo*Con, Uncategorized, winner, writer on January 23, 2012 by brentabell

I would like to thank Rose.  This evening I was given the Liebster Blog Award.  It is a German term for ‘dearest’ and is given to up-and-coming bloggers.  If you would like to check out Rose’s blog you can click here and drop by.

I hear someone in the crowd shouting, “Speech, speech, speech!”  So I will make them happy…

I started this path two years ago and I have met many new friends, signed some books, and I have lived out a dream I had in high school many, many moons ago.  I have learned how to take rejection in stride, I learned that authors spend all the money they make at conventions on booze, and I got to read at Horrorfind 13 in Gettysburg.  Today I read a review that didn’t praise me, but didn’t call me out either.  Today I found out I won an award for my words on trying to get this writing thing going and what a new writer has to endure to survive and grow.  Most of all, I learned I made the right choice in pursuing this dream.  The ride is just getting started, so buckle up, and keep your hands and feet inside the car…it’s going to be a wild ride.

Well the party has started, there is beer to be consumed, and I think I am really just going to go to bed.

Goodnight…

Coffin Hop 2011 Winner and Some Things to Ponder

Posted in coffin hop, fiction, horror, Jeff Strand, life, winner, writer on November 1, 2011 by brentabell

In honor of the winner, I shall use the big ass banner.  It is a shame to retire it, I rather liked it.  All of you lucky visitors have been placed into the Cubs hat (yes, the Cubs) and the name has been drawn for the Coffin Hop 2011 winner from my site.  And the winner is…Rose!  I will get in touch with her and Jeff so we can get everything set up!  Congratulations to you again and thanks to everyone who stopped by and I hope everyone comes back to visit and check for more news and release information.  Year one was a blip on the radar, year two rocked some serious ass, and year three will find me kicking the door in and taking names.  So join me as I enter 2012 with some big plans and other fun.

Pondering… A few posts ago, I reported that the anthology featuring my first accepted story had been cancelled.  This morning I found out it still has been set to be printed at some point in 2012.  I thought it was toast, so I brushed up the story (hey, I’ve learned a lot since it was written) and sent it out again.  I would rather have it come out from the original publisher from the standpoint of I’ll make more and I am not 100% comfortable with a foreign publisher.  If taken by the foreign publisher, it would be out faster, but is all about the speed?  If I withdraw the foreign submission and take the deal for more but it comes out later, am I just greedy?  I find myself on a fine line, I want the better deal, but I also want the story to get out there in the wild.  I’ll let everyone know later when I figure it out myself.

Good night!
